Effective Listening Skills To
Increase Your Massage Business!
Effective Listening Skills are key not only to your Massage Therapist business ...
but also in your self care program and how to reduce stress!
"How Effective Are Your Listening Skills?"
Effective listening skills are very important, and I've written about various Massage Marketing Tips Listening Skills in several of my previous articles because I feel it's extremely important.
The reason I return to listening so often is that, in my opinion, it is one of the most important ingredients for success in virtually all aspects of life - personally and as a professional massage therapist.
Unfortunately, for many of us, it's also one of our greatest weaknesses. Yet the slightest improvement in creating effective listening skills can pay enormous dividends in the way of better relationships, enhanced performance, and yes, even stress reduction!
Take a moment to reflect on your own listening skills.
- Do you truly listen to your colleagues?
- Do you let them finish their thoughts before you take your turn?
- Do you sometimes finish sentences for your clients and colleagues?
- During employee staff meetings or client intake meetings, are you patient and responsive – or are you impatient and reactive?
- Do you allow words from massage clients to sink in, or do you assume you know what the client is trying to say, so you jump in?
Simply asking yourself these and related questions can be enormously helpful. Most massage therapists I've asked (I'm in this category too), admit that, at least some of the time, their listening skills could use a little improvement.
How To Reduce Stress By Changing Your Listening Habits
Also, there are a variety of reasons why enhancing your effective listening skills can reduce your level of stress.
First of all, massage therapists who listen well are highly respected and sought after. Their clients return more often since the therapist listened to what they wanted, knew what needed to be accomplished, and then gave the perfect massage.
If you have clients knocking your door down to re-schedule, wouldn't that lower your financial stress level? Certainly!
Truly great listeners are so rare that when we are around one, it feels good, it makes us feel special. Since effective listeners are loved by their clients and colleagues (and the people they live with), they avoid many of the most common stressful aspects of work – backstabbing, resentment, sabotage, and ill feelings.
Let's also not forget the #1 reason businesses don't perform nearly as well as they should:
Indifference Towards Clients!
What's indifference? Simply put, it's when you didn't make the client feel special. An absence of feeling or interest.
In the massage therapy industry, indifference will make you work twice as hard to retain clients, thus, more work. You may also get the reputation as someone who doesn't care. How are you going to acquire referrals with a reputation like that??
Let's continue on...
Good listeners are easy to be around, so, quite naturally, you want to reach out and help them. Therefore, when you become a better listener, there will probably be plenty of people in your corner to offer assistance. People tend to be loyal to good listeners because the feel acknowledged and respected.
How can you relate to improving your effective listening skills as a massage therapist?
- Your colleagues and spa managers will be more open to assisting you in tough situations, or, when you need a favor, they will go out of their way to help you!
- Since your clients are loyal to you now that you listen to their wants and needs, they trust you, are more flexible to your scheduled hours, open to new and more profit-generating massage packages, willing to purchase retail products, etc., etc.
Improving your effective listening skills can help you to understand what clients and colleagues are saying the first time they say it, thus allowing you to avoid a great number of mistakes and misinterpretations which, as you know, can be very stressful.
If you ask your clients what frustrates them and makes them angry, many will tell you that "not being listened to" is right near the top of their lists. So, being more attentive to what clients are saying also helps you avoid many, if not most, misunderstandings.
Finally, effective listening is an enormous time-saver because it helps you eliminate sloppy mistakes. Instructions as well as concerns for others become crystal clear, thus helping fend off unnecessary, time-consuming errors.
This is one of those powerful strategies that can generate immediate and significant results. You may have to work at it a little, but if you do, it will be well worth it.
The people you work with (and your massage clients!) may not be able to put their finger on exactly what it is that you're doing differently, but they will notice a difference in how they feel when they are around you, or when they are speaking to you.
And, in addition to being more liked and admired, you'll find yourself becoming calmer and more peaceful as well!
