Massage Therapist Self Care

Massage therapist self care needs to be a top priority if you are to enjoy and extend your career. Learn how to take care of yourself with our tips listed below.

Be your best (for you and your clients) by incorporating a self care program into your daily routine. How can we assist others if we are not healthy ourselves?

Massage Therapist Self Care

Massage therapist self care - Start with a healthy program. If you don't have one, keep reading below, as I have provided several examples of positive, healthy self care programs. My own program consists of the Four M's: Receiving massage, movement with resistance and stretching, meditation and mindfulness in daily activities and life opportunities.

Massage-Therapist-Self-Care

One thing we often run up against during life's challenges is the resistance in taking care of ourselves, or what I like to call, a lack of massage therapist self care.

It's not that we're not capable of self-care, but that self-care has a negative connotation for us.

It's difficult to admit that we need some time off, a vacation, someone to talk to, someone to help us. We somehow believe that taking time for ourselves is selfish.

After all, we have our families, our children, and our jobs to think about. Too often we continue on with our usual routines without taking the time to process and reflect on our daily lives.

If you suffer a personal injury, such as a broken leg, severed limb, or heart attack, you're forced to remain in the hospital for a certain length of time. Your body requires that you be still and rest in order to properly recover.

We accept this without question. Yet, why don't we do this with massage therapist self care on a daily or weekly basis? Yet, we're reluctant to believe that our minds and emotions need similar recovery time. It doesn't make any sense.

One of the most successful self care programs I've found is called EFT Tapping In Las Vegas, and you can read about it here, EFT Tapping In Las Vegas. This protocol eliminates negative emotions and assists with chronic physical pain. Learn it and perform it on yourself...then share with your massage clients! Here's the actual steps or protocol, Emotional Freedom Techniques.

Also understand that massage therapist self care is more than just keeping good posture and taking care of your hands. Most massage therapists think that's all there is to it. Not so fast!

Rest and recovery is necessary and required for life. Taking time to get away for a while, reflect, journal, and provide ourselves proper massage therapist self care goes a long way toward helping us avoid physical/mental/spiritual pain in the future.

Self Care For Massage Therapists

Self care for massage therapists - In order to take care of yourself, You must connect with Yourself on a daily basis. As massage therapists we always want to take care of others first, not ourselves. It must be in our DNA. It seems we always have the best intentions, but the follow through is the hardest part and the most important for any massage therapist self care program.

Already Have A Great Self Care Program?

After reading this page, if you already have a fabulous massage therapist self care program, share your program with the rest of the massage community. We'd love to hear from you and your shared experience will help others as well! See how other Massage Therapist Self Care Comments have helped our fellow massage therapists, see other articles that I've written about self care, and grab some tips for yourself.

OK, let's proceed!

The most obvious questions that arise when we touch on a subject matter such as massage therapist self care are, "You don't know me. You don't know what it's like to be me. You don't know what I'm going through. How can you possibly give advice?" Great questions!

I am human, and we're much more similar than many of us care to admit. What I'd like to do is share with you what I've gone through and perhaps you can relate to some of the idea's that are presented.

Once again, keep in mind that proper massage therapist self care is more than just being able to get up and go to work at your massage business, perform proper body mechanics, eat a healthy diet, etc., etc. There are a multitude of 'things' we deal with just by being human!

My Ki Aikido Self Care Program

The massage therapist self care program that has taken care of me over the last twenty years has been my Ki Aikido Las Vegas Program. Ki-Aikido is my self care outlet physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Here are some of the 'things' I mentioned above that we need to be concerned with if we are going to live long, happy and healthy lives!

Ki Breathing - Self Care as well as Stress Relief Meditation for techniques enhancing not only mental, physical and emotional, but also spiritual as well.

And, last but not least, your Financial - Self Care.

I'm unsure where to place the financial aspect of our lives...does it fall under mental or emotional? All I know is that our financial situation is of great importance to all of us, whether we like to admit it or not.

Stress Relief For Massage Therapists

If you are already stressed out, please visit this article on how to Define Stress and how to create Massage Stress Relief. Stress relief massage is what we work on with clients, but what about YOU? Let's continue on so we can touch on these all important issues for your massage therapist self care program.

First and foremost, you must make the decision to connect with yourself on a daily basis. Then, you need to follow through to make it happen. I'll share with you a process I've gone through on what you can do and how you can do it, but ultimately you need to commit to connect with yourself on a daily basis and stick with it. Change and adjust your program all you want, but stick with it!

Let me back up a moment to make one point clear. We can change a lot of what we do in our lives, our external factors such as finding a new job, or buying a new car, but keep in mind that changing any or all of these external factors won't really satisfy us and make us happy until we really take a hard look at the one area we all seem to avoid the most: Ourselves!

Ok, I'll put the soapbox away and let's continue on...

Once you make the commitment, make the decision and stick with it...Only then will your life flow together and begin to feel like what you are always looking for within yourself.

"Where Do I Start?"

If you don't know where to begin on your massage therapist self care program, you can always start with a couple of questions. (To yourself of course!)

  • "What have I done for myself lately?"
  • "How do I take care of myself?"
  • "How do I acknowledge myself?"

Write these questions down and spend some time answering them. You may be surprised at how little massage therapist self care you are actually performing!

Once you've committed to your decision, you need to get organized. We've already begun by writing down and answering the three questions above. (See how easy this is?)

Create your own journal or file on your computer. Answer these three questions above. Write or type out your answers in complete detail.

"What Are My Goals?"

Once you've got your process working, the next question just comes naturally: Figuring out what it is that you need! Take some time and compose a list of ideas of what it is you really want and need. Daydream and visualize what your perfect day would be like.

Take some notes on what it is you need. Write out all the words you need to express yourself. Don't be shy; your future is at stake here! Work on this daily and work on this for however long it takes. Again, your Massage Therapist Self Care Program is critical if you're going to last in this business.

At this point you may want to create a bit more dialogue. Create some goals, something you want to work towards.

  • "My goal is..."

  • "The reason I want to achieve this goal is..."

  • "I would be more satisfied if I achieved my goal, because..."

Figure out what you enjoy and work towards it. I suggest you work on this for a minimum of a half hour per day in peace and quiet.

Be Proactive And Ask For Assistance

Now that you've figured out what you want to do and how you want to do it, bring your ideas out with those you trust. Talk to your significant other and your family. Explain to them what you need and ask them for their assistance with what you need.

"I need thirty minutes a day for my Stress Relief Meditation for time to relax in peace and quiet."

"I need to go to Yoga class three times a week at 6 p.m. Assist me with this by taking care of the kids during this time."

Remember what was written up above? You need Action! Do what you say you are going to do. You have to execute! If not, those that you've spoken with won't accept your boundaries as they've seen that you haven't followed through.

Once you begin your massage therapist self care program you'll need to review your questions and goals on a weekly basis to ensure you're following through. Hey, maybe your predilection is to write. Write to your hearts content!

Let's change gears here and look at some of the barriers that we always run into on our quest for successful care of ourselves.

Lack of Time. "I don't have time for this self care stuff."

The culprit of 'lack of time' is usually a failure to organize. Create some daily habits that will help you organize your time. How much time do you waste unproductively every day? If you really paid attention to this it might amaze you. Get organized and you'll have more time, I guarantee you. If all else fails, get up out of bed thirty minutes earlier every morning and begin your day with some good habits and scheduling.

The Perfectionist. "This isn't just as I want it, I'll just quit."

Most of us have pretty high expectations of ourselves that are hard to meet. Massage therapist self care is about taking care of your self. Loosen up a bit, will ya'? When you become frustrated, take a step back and take a deep breath. As Suzuki Sensei always told us, "Breathe, breathe, breathe..." As the old saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day." Neither is your Massage Therapist Self Care Program. Keep at it. Persistence is the key to most everything in life.

The Worrier. "Could I being doing something more productive rather than working on this Massage Therapist Self Care stuff?"

This is a very serious issue that we are all afflicted with. Worry is based in Fear. We are either worrying about what we did in the past or worrying what we're going to do in the future. What happened to the Now? What I say is: Stop worrying right now. It's a waste of time and energy. If your mind comes up with something you need to do, get a notepad and write it down, or purchase a small tape recorder and make a list of To-Do's. Then of course, when you are done with your self care, you can prioritize your tasks and complete them.

I could continue on but I think you understand how this works.

All Plans Require Action!

Take the first step now. You may be young and strong at the moment, but if you don't schedule Massage Therapist Self Care time you will burn out before you even really get started!

Keep this in mind:

Actions need to be very simple
in order to be successful!

Take one step at a time. Success doesn't have to be complicated. It's about doing the little things every day.

Each week, focus on making one change. Get this down then focus on something else you love. If you keep doing this, just image who you'll be in five years!

And always remember to give yourself a pat on the back! Keep your spirits high and include Self Recognition or your successful Self Care Program!
